Marine Industry Cares Foundation
The Marine Industry Cares Foundation (MICF) is a Fort Lauderdale nonprofit that, in its own words, mobilizes the generous spirit of the maritime community to benefit children and families in need. It works by connecting South Florida’s marine industry with local charities and raising money on their behalf.
The foundation grew out of the Spin-A-Thon, a stationary-bike fundraiser that the local marine trade had already run for several years before MICF was formally set up in 2011. Its founding directors included David Reed, publisher of The Triton, and early beneficiaries included Kids In Distress (KID). By early 2014 it reported having raised more than $500,000 for charities serving children and families.
The Spin-A-Thon remains its signature fundraiser, and the foundation’s website currently tracks a Spin-A-Thon campaign toward a $175,000 goal. MICF also fundraises around the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show each fall.
