Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce
The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) is a private, member-supported business association serving Miami-Dade County. Its stated mission is to “grow, improve and protect the Greater Miami Business Community by advocating, educating and convening.” The chamber works with businesses of all sizes on public policy, networking and leadership development, and describes its member companies as employing more than 400,000 people.
The organization’s roots go back to the Miami Board of Trade, which formed shortly after the city incorporated in 1896 and was chartered in 1907. It later merged with the Merchants’ Association to become the Miami Chamber of Commerce. Under President E.G. “Ev” Sewell, starting in 1915, it pushed for aviation, clean water, tourism and baseball in the young city. The chamber says it has operated continuously through two world wars, the civil rights era and Hurricane Andrew.
Its current policy priorities are education and workforce development, resilience, transportation, and workforce housing. Members take part through committees and public forums. Its schedule for late September 2026 included a transportation forum with the Florida Department of Transportation secretary and town halls on Amendment 3.
The chamber’s leadership programs include Leadership Miami, which runs in classes that end with a project pitch night, and Senior Executive Orientation. Its yearly calendar includes the Goals Conference & Annual Meeting of the Members, where board leadership and priorities for the year are presented.
Its best-known honor is the Sand in My Shoes Award, given since 1981 to people who have made lasting contributions to Greater Miami. The 2026 award goes to Cesar L. Alvarez at a ceremony at Jungle Island on October 15, 2026.
Alfred Sánchez is President & CEO. For fiscal year 2025–26, Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega chairs the board. Juan Carlos “JC” Liscano, vice president of American Airlines’ MIA operations, is chair-elect. The chamber announced these officers in June 2025.
