Magic Leap
Magic Leap is an augmented reality (AR) company headquartered in Plantation, Florida. It designs and manufactures optics and display technology for AR glasses, with a focus on waveguides. Waveguides are the thin see-through lenses that carry digital images to the eye.
The company was founded in 2010 by Rony Abovitz. It became one of the best-funded startups in the United States and has raised at least $3.5 billion. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is its largest investor. Magic Leap released two headsets, Magic Leap One and Magic Leap 2. Magic Leap 2 went on sale on September 30, 2022, and was aimed at enterprise users. Support and cloud services for Magic Leap One ended on December 31, 2024.
Magic Leap now describes itself as an ecosystem partner for other companies building AR devices. It offers waveguide design and manufacturing, display systems and prototyping. Its customers are technology companies developing AI-enabled display glasses, not consumers. In addition to its Plantation headquarters, the company lists offices in Israel and Switzerland.
Ross Rosenberg, a former Bain Capital operating executive, has been chief executive since November 1, 2023. He succeeded Peggy Johnson.
Recent news: Magic Leap’s partnership with Google was first reported in May 2024. On October 29, 2025, the company announced a three-year extension at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh. It also showed a prototype of AR glasses that pairs Magic Leap waveguides and optics with Google’s Raxium microLED light engine.
In July 2026, Magic Leap filed a WARN notice covering 193 jobs at its Plantation headquarters, effective October 1, 2026. Affected roles include software, hardware, UX/design, product management, manufacturing engineering, quality and senior leadership. The company said it had “sharpened our strategic focus” on “waveguide manufacturing and device integration.” Trade press described the move as an exit from building its own headsets to become a waveguide supplier. The company also cut about 75 jobs in July 2024.
