ModMed (Modernizing Medicine)
ModMed, formerly known as Modernizing Medicine, is a Boca Raton healthcare technology company. It builds cloud-based software for specialty medical practices.
The company was founded in 2010 by technology entrepreneur Dan Cane and dermatologist Dr. Michael Sherling. Their aim was to pair software expertise with clinical experience. ModMed is still headquartered in Boca Raton and also has an office in Hyderabad, India. It reports more than 2,500 employees worldwide.
ModMed’s core product is EMA (Electronic Medical Assistant), an electronic health record (EHR) system built for individual specialties. It also offers gGastro, an EHR for gastroenterology, along with practice management, revenue cycle management, patient engagement and analytics tools. Its AI documentation product, ModMed Scribe 2.0, turns exam-room conversations into clinical notes. The company says it can cut documentation time by 50%.
The software serves 11 specialties: allergy, dermatology, ENT, gastroenterology, OB/GYN, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, plastic surgery, podiatry and urology. The company says nearly 50,000 providers use its products.
Ownership: In March 2025, Santa Monica-based private equity firm Clearlake Capital agreed to buy a majority stake in ModMed from Warburg Pincus at a reported $5.3 billion valuation. Warburg Pincus had held a majority stake since 2017. Dan Cane and Joe Harpaz are co-CEOs.
Recent news: On March 24, 2026, the Business Intelligence Group gave ModMed a 2026 Artificial Intelligence Excellence Award for its “AI-Powered Practice” strategy. On April 20, 2026, ModMed announced it had acquired Bonsai Health for undisclosed terms. Bonsai’s AI platform finds gaps in patient care and openings in provider schedules, then contacts patients by text and email to bring them back and let them book appointments.
